Red gram/ Vanpayar – 1 cup
Salt – 1 tsp. / to taste
Shallots – 10 big
Red onion – 1 big, finely chopped
Dry red chillies – 3 whole ( I used Shama brand)
Curry leaves – a few
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp.
Coconut oil as needed
Cook the red gram in your pressure cooker adding salt and 21/4 cups water. Simmer for 30 minutes after the 1st whistle. Open the cooker when the presure completely subsides & drain the excess water.
Pound the shallots & dry red chillies and keep aside.
Heat oil and splutter the mustard seeds. Add the chopped onions, pounded mixture, curry leaves and stir fry till brown. Add the cooked red gram and 1/8 cups water and mix everything well. Cook for a minute till the dish turns out semi- dry.
