Elephant yam, Drumstick & Prawn curry aka Chena, muringakka chemeen varutharacha curry

  1. Cook together 1 cup of cubed elephant yam, half of a big drumstick ( cut into 2″ pieces), 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder, 2 slit greenchillies, 1 medium onion (thinly sliced), 2 big garlic cloves ( chopped), 1/4 cup of prawns (already cooked by adding enough salt & turmeric powder, a few torn curryleaves, 3/4 tsp of salt in 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil & cover cook on low heat for 15 minutes.
  2. Add 1 medium tomato (quartered) & cook further for 5 minutes.
  3. In another pan, heat 2 tbsps of coconut oil & add 1 cup of grated coconut, 2 shallots/kunjulli, 2 torn curryleaves & fry till the coconut turns crisp & golden brown in colour. Add 1 heaping tbsp of coriander powder, 3/4 heaping tsp of red chilly powder, 1/4 tsp of pepper powder, 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder & fry for a minute. Grind to a very smooth paste without adding any water.
  4. Add this paste and 1 cup of water to the cooked veggie-prawns mixture & bring to a boil.
  5. Cook on medium high heat for 5 minutes or till the oil seperates.
  6. Add 3/4 tsp of garam masala powder & remove from heat.
