Sweet Surnali Dosa



  1. White rice – 1.5 cups
  2. Methi seeds – 1/4 tsp.
  3. Beaten rice/ Aval – 1/2 cup
  4. Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  5. Jaggery – 1 tbsp.+ 1/4 cup; divided
  6. Thick curd – 2 tbsps.
  7. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp.
  8. Salt – 1 tsp.
  9. Water – as needed
  10. Baking soda – 1/4 tsp.
  11. White butter for serving


  1. Soak the rice along with the methi seeds in water for 5-6 hours. Drain water from the rice.
  2. Grind the rice along with methi seeds, beaten rice, curd, 1 tbsp. of jaggery, grated coconut, salt & turmeric powder adding water as needed to a thick slightly coarse paste (like idli batter). The batter should be thick like idli batter.Keep this batter aside for 8 hours so that it ferments.
  3. After 8 hours add enough water and 1/4 cup of jaggery. The batter should have the consistency of palappam/vellayappam batter. Sprinkle baking soda all over the batter & mix well.
  4. Heat a pan till it becomes really hot. Lower heat & pour a ladleful of batter. Do not spread this batter. It should spread by itself into a circle. Cover cook the dosa on low heat till fully cooked.
  5. Serve hot with white butter.
