Nutella and coconut bars



For the base:-

  1. Butter – 50 grams
  2. Castor sugar – 1 heaping tbsp.
  3. Salt – a pinch
  4. All purpose flour – 1/2 cup

For the middle layer :-

  1. Nutella – 1/4 cup

For the nutty coconut topping:-

  1. Egg – 1 number
  2. Baking powder – 1/2 tsp.
  3. Plain flour – 1/2 heaping tbsp.
  4. Salt – a pinch
  5. Light brown sugar – 1/2 cup (packed)
  6. Vanilla essence – 1/2 tsp.
  7. Chopped walnuts – 1/2 cup
  8. Coconut cuts (toasted till dry) /flakes – 3/4 cup


  1. For the base, beat together the butter and castor sugar till creamy and fluffy. Add the plain flour, salt and mix till the whole mixture resembles coarse bread crumbs. Press this mixture on to the base of a 2 lb. loaf pan lined with parchment paper. Chill for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180C.
  3. Bake the base at 180C for 20 minutes. Keep aside to cool.
  4. Spead Nutella over the cooled base.
  5. For the topping, beat together the egg, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, essence and salt. Fold in the nuts and coconut cuts.
  6. Pour this mixture over the Nutella layer.
  7. Bake further at 180C for 25 minutes.
  8. Let cool completely. Refrigerate overnight or till firm. Cut into bars/squares.
  9. Serve with a cup of tea/coffee.
